The OKERO Foundation

Welcome to the website of the OKERO Foundation. This website is presented in Dutch and on this page you will find a summary in English of the information included in the website.

History

The Foundation was established on 1st September 1998 as a result of a four months graduate study program undertaken by the Dutch student Mariko van Vemde in the village of Kisii in the Nyanza region in Kenya. At that time Mariko stayed with a very helpful couple named Martha and Reuben who also provided care for local people in need. Mariko was very moved by the circumstances in which many orphans lived and resolved to make a difference in their lives. Back in the Netherlands the OKERO Foundation was started by Mariko and her mother, supported by their family and friends, in order to provide an educational strong start in life for  some of these young people.

Activities

The OKERO Foundation provides financial support for the education of  eleven children whose names and photos are on the website. This education includes boarding school at primary and secondary levels followed by either vocational training or study at university. Contact persons in Kenya are the same Martha and Reuben, who select schools, purchase uniforms, books and personal supplies. They also remain in contact with the schools and administer the donated funds and provide regular reports. Funds are mainly collected by a group of loyal donors and also by specific fundraising events. The names of the board members of the OKERO Foundation can also be found on this website.
